What does your role involve?
I manage the company’s procurement workflow across new build, refurbishment, roofing and kitchens and bathrooms. This involves identifying new opportunities and selecting key projects and frameworks to tender, and managing a team of estimators and bid writers to prepare tender returns.
What’s your background?
I’ve spent 38 years in the construction industry, starting out as an apprentice carpenter and joiner, with four years spent working for a church and cathedral contractor. I worked my way up to become a director of a construction and joinery business for developers. For the last 15 years, I have been involved in procuring new build, refurbishment, retrofit and fire safety projects.
What are you enjoying most so far about your role?
There are lots of great opportunities out there for Elkins and I’m excited to successfully procure new projects for the business. I enjoy reading up on the latest legislation and regulations, and ensuring this information is distributed to all our employees so they can keep their knowledge up to date. Most of all, I enjoy building relationships and working collaboratively with our consultants and supply chain partners.
What appealed to you about the job?
Pre-construction is an exciting area of the business to work in due to the planning and strategizing involved in the tendering process. It’s also great to be part of a team of enthusiastic people, all working towards a common goal to win new work for the business.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy working on my own construction projects and I’m also developing my professional knowledge with Fire Safety (Level 6) and Retrofit (Level 5). I’m a West Ham Utd supporter and enjoy following the football. I also have four grandchildren, which means the weekends can be busy!
