Training and
apprenticeships

Community focused

So we can deliver against our social value objectives of training and employment, we liaise closely with the London communities in which we work, to create opportunities for local people by providing sponsorship, and taking the lead in developing community projects to help improve local environments and providing apprenticeship placements for local people.

Apprenticeships

We are committed to offering apprenticeships and training opportunities to local residents, including those from socially excluded groups and people not in education. Where we are unable to offer direct employment or an apprenticeship, we will liaise with our supply chain and sub-contractors to agree placements. This is a system that has seen many success stories. Over 95% of apprentices and trainees have gone into long-term employment with Elkins or our suppliers.

Training and apprenticeship opportunities we offer

  • Resident liaison
  • Site management
  • Window fitting
  • Roofing
  • Electrical and heating engineering
  • Multi trade
  • Administration

Opportunities are advertised at events and community initiatives such as estate fun days, where we run mock job interviews and training exercises; in monthly newsletters to estates where we are working; at resident meetings and through our existing community recruitment partners.

Who we work with:

Local housing officers T&RA representatives

To identify the needs of residents who may benefit from a work placement.

Local schools

To discuss the construction industry, training and apprenticeship opportunities with pupils of school leaving age.

Job centres

We work in partnership with the job centre, attending local job fairs and offering apprenticeship opportunities to local residents.

Financial resilience

We put great emphasis on using local labour and sub-contractors and our management team and site managers are encouraged to actively source local enterprises. This helps regenerate the local area whilst reducing environmental impact. Over 60% of our tradespeople, suppliers and sub-contractors are based within London’s most disadvantaged boroughs. We ensure smaller businesses and sole traders seeking opportunities to distinguish themselves are given the chance to join our preferred contractor list. We help them to complete PQQs and give guidance if they need to improve on issues such as health and safety and insurances.
