Since 2021, Elkins has been undertaking multiple refurbishment projects at Kingswood Estate for Southwark Council. Early on during our work, we contacted Dulwich Wood Primary School (located within the estate), as part of our commitment to providing social value to local people. Since then, we have continued to work closely with them to support their various events and initiatives. Our previous involvement has included donating to school fairs and sponsoring the children’s football kits last year, now we’re pleased to have been involved in their biggest project to date.
Last year, Elkins’ Social Value Manager, Ayesha, and Contracts Manager, Paul, were invited by Friends of Dulwich Wood (a small charity set up to raise funds to provide learning resources for school’s students), to discuss plans for an exciting new project – an outdoor science area. The volunteers at Friends of Dulwich Wood had already been fundraising for this project for some time and we were keen to make a significant contribution to help the plans come to fruition. Elkins arranged to donate £8,000 towards the costs.
Our involvement didn’t stop there; we were keen to see how much money we could raise for the project by appealing to the generosity of our supplier network. We reached out to the subcontractors on our Kingswood project and were thrilled to receive a further £9,195 in donations from Aereco Ltd, Bronzewood Metalworks, Cablesheer, Grout Electrical, Opus Waterproofing, PJ Mear, System Controls Installation, Token Cleaning, GC Construct and SO Integrations. This brought the total amount raised to a staggering £17,195, which was enough to cover the cost of the science tables.
Work on the project began at the beginning of April, over the school’s Easter holidays, and it was completed earlier this month. The grand opening of the outdoor science area took place on 17th May, with members of the Elkins team in attendance alongside Local MP, Helen Hayes (who cut the ribbon) and Councillor Andrew Simmons. Our Social Value Manager, Ayesha, said: “We’re delighted to have been involved in this project, which provides long-term value for the school and its current and future students. We look forward to seeing local children enjoy this new outdoor learning space for many years to come.”
