Project Overview

Elkins Construction was appointed to deliver two temporary modular classrooms for Ickburgh Primary School in Hackney, a specialist Special Educational Needs (SEN) school supporting children with a range of learning and physical needs. The project was commissioned to provide much-needed additional teaching space, ensuring the school could accommodate more pupils in a safe, comfortable, and inclusive environment tailored to their specific requirements.

Working in partnership with Portakabin, Elkins delivered two fully equipped modular classrooms on a three-year hire basis. Each classroom was designed to accommodate up to 10 students and five staff, with integrated toilets, a staff office, and a tea bay. The new spaces were designed with accessibility, comfort, and supervision in mind, supporting the school’s commitment to providing a calm and supportive environment for its learners.

Modular Construction

Elkins Construction provided a complete turnkey solution, delivering two fully finished classrooms using 3D volumetric construction. The classrooms were prefabricated offsite in a controlled factory environment, ensuring high quality construction, precision, and efficiency. This method allowed for rapid assembly onsite, ensuring the new facilities were ready for the start of term. In addition to speed and quality, the 3D volumetric method offered environmental benefits, including reduced waste, lower carbon emissions, and minimal disruption to the school and surrounding community.

Safeguarding Pupils

Given that Ickburgh is a live school environment, careful planning was essential to ensure the works were carried out safely with minimal disruption. The entire installation was carried out during the summer holidays, when the school was unoccupied. This approach safeguarded both pupils and staff, allowing Elkins to complete all onsite works efficiently and safely, while maintaining the highest standards of site management and security. By coordinating closely with the school and local authority, the project team ensured the site was fully operational and ready for the new term with no impact on the school’s daily activities.

Outcome

The project was completed successfully and handed over on time, providing two modern, functional, and fully equipped classrooms that meet the unique needs of Ickburgh’s pupils and teachers. By delivering the works during the summer break, Elkins Construction ensured total safety for staff and students, while the turnkey 3D volumetric solution provided a fast, sustainable, and high-quality way to expand the school’s teaching capacity.
